If you happen to hear that Kanye West has died, we’d urge you not to shed any tears. Also, try not to look up the details on unfamiliar sites, as hackers have been exploiting rumors about the rapper’s passing in order to spread scareware and make money. Hackers Exploit Kanye West Death Hoax A quick fact check: West did not die in a car crash. Or even get into one at all (which thankfully means that a Ferrari remains safe). Now we’re just going to skim past that detail into the security aspect of the story. Graham Cluley wrote, “Using search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques, hackers have managed to push malicious webpages claiming to be about Kanye West’s ‘death’ high on the results of internet search engines. . . . Clicking on the link will take you to a webpage that tries to infect you with fake anti-virus (also known as scareware).” Then, naturally, if your computer is infected, the hackers will swoop in with a fix - so long as you’re willing to pay up. So this is the latest reason to not get too adventurous when it comes to seeking out news. Stick to big names in the industry like the BBC, or at least familiar blogs, when possible, and always be wary when you hear about an odd celebrity death.
